Resources for Church Effectiveness

Assimilation Study

David Durey, Director of the Intentional Discipleship Network, in cooperation with Mission Portland conducted a study with the purpose of identifying transferable principles drawn from churches that had been successful in attracting and assimilating unchurched people.  The multi-case approach selected leading churches from among the fifty largest churches in the Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington metropolitan area and conducted on-site interviews.

Ministry Match

The Ministry Match is a personal evaluation tool designed by Christians for Christians. The purpose of the Ministry Match is to help persons discover and understand how God uniquely created them and then to help them use this information to serve God in the most effective way possible. There are two versions of the Ministry Match. The Professional version was specially created to evaluate pastors, church staff and vocational Christian workers. The Lay version was specially written to help local church members find ministries in their own church that would be most fruitful and fulfilling.

The ministry match, Church Matching Program was developed to equip local church staff as well as placement personnel in denominations and seminaries to easily match persons with specific ministries they have defined. The Ministry match is presently used by The Evangelical Free Church of America Placement Office, Trinity International University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and hundreds of pastors and churches across America.

Why is Intentional Discipleship so Important?

While most churches "believe" in making disciples, very few are effectively making them. Most church leaders, when asked, cannot even define "Disciple", and hardly any have been trained to "Make disciples". Consider the following statistics:

  • The average "evangelical" church in America wins 1.67 persons (less than 2) to Christ and their church each year for every 100 persons who attend that church.

  • One-third of church members state their greatest individual needs are not being met by their church.

  • Less than 50% of church members pray for 5 minutes at least twice a week.

  • Only 11% of church members have shared the gospel even once in the last year and 33% have never shared the gospel with anyone.
